Host City announced

During an extensive bidding process, the 3 shortlisted cities of Brighton and Manchester in the UK and Reykjavík in Iceland worked hard to give us all the possibility of three fantastic festivals in 2030.

The Legato Projects team reviewed the bids, gave our recommendations and asked you, our member choirs, for your preference. The results have been received and we are proud to announce:

The city of Brighton will host Various Voices 2030

Brighton

The Legato board would like to thank the Manchester and Reykjavík teams for their inspiring proposals.

The result of the members vote (57 choirs voted) was:
  • Brighton 239 votes
  • Reykjavik 190 votes
  • Manchester 146 votes.

LEGATO Academy Warsaw 2025

The full weekend in March of workshops and meetups brought
  • brought 35 participants to a great venue in Warsaw
  • with 17 different workshops, lectures and groups discussion,
  • from topics including choosing repertoire, trans vocal health, activism in LGBT+ choirs, and fundraising for success.
It wasn’t all work, there were lots of social activities, a queer tour of the city, dinners and late-night club visits.

Thank you to all participants for making it such a rich and enjoyable weekend of learning and fun and a special shout-out to our hosts in Warsaw and all our fabulous workshop leaders.

The biggest highlight for me was connecting with other choirs and sharing experiences. It was incredible to learn from both the workshop leaders and other choir members who have so much experience. I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to grow, gain new insights, and bring fresh ideas back to my own choir!”

LEGATO Membership Survey 2024 - Guiding us in the years ahead!

LEGATO was formed in 1995 after the Various Voices festival in Groningen to help build continuity into organizing the four-yearly choral gathering. VV remains our flagship event, but in the intervening 30 years our community has grown to over 170 choirs across the European continent. With it, our goals have increased in ambition while the challenges faced by our choirs and our communities have risen in complexity.

Last year, LEGATO conducted a survey of all our choirs to better understand not only our current make-up as a diffuse and varied network of international queer choirs, but also to identify where our needs are and how each of us can leverage the ties we have with each other to overcome them.

98 choirs responded, and we want to thank you: your information will help us all build a more robust and resilient choral community. We now have a clearer idea of what LEGATO, both as an organization and as a family, can do to strengthen our connections and unlock the potential in our diversity of experiences, our breadth of knowledge and our desire for solidarity.

Three foundational themes have emerged: connectedness, communications and challenges to be overcome.

  • Connectedness: our choirs want to feel better connected to each other in LEGATO, with more opportunities for interaction on-line and in-person.
  • Communications: a flourishing community requires broad and deep communication between its members and one which actively seeks out and hears marginalized voices from within our own community.
  • Challenges to be overcome: the survey revealed not only what challenges our choirs face, but also where knowledge can be found to overcome them. LEGATO is positioned to connect our choirs in a complementary way.

In the coming months you will hear more about how we explore and elaborate each of these themes, but we welcome your participation!

Feel free to get in touch, or to join Team LEGATO above.
